Backgammon has at last found its place in the US in the twentieth century. It is said that that the Doubling Cube emerged from the brain of a gambler, a cube which could literally accelerate the speed and make it a more challenging game. After a slow dip in the forties, the enormous efforts of Prince Alexis Obelensky, the first official Backgammon World Championships were held in the Bahama Islands at Las Vegas in 1960. Soon after these Championships, backgammon regained its popularity. The World Championship tournament is awarded the highest honor even today. All these have taken place in the United States only. The international tournaments conducted at Bahamas from 1964 to 1970 have produced many stalwarts like Wacker, John Crawford, and Cooke etc. However Oswald Jacoby still holds the record of winning the tournaments in a row. Monte Carlo has emerged as another very popular place for conducting international tournaments. Players like Oswald Jacoby and Carol Crawford have won the world championship tournaments. The 1970s heightened the game to dizzy heights of popularity. This period could see the emergence of many popular titles like The Backgammon Book, Backgammon for Profit and many other periodicals and articles.
